To the left, you will see the work of Flo Oy Wong. The style of many of her works of art is based on using old suitcases or other objects that can contain items. She fills them with images and smaller objects that are important to her personal culture and interests.

  • By looking at this piece, what do you think her life is like?

  • What do you think she is affected by?

  • How can you tell what her cultural background is like (what objects indicate this)?

Nyugen Smith's piece to the right uses the earth's continents as a form of container, holding imagery that shows the effects of colonialism. Colonialism is when one country takes over another country with an influx of settlers in order to benefit from their economy. By filling one country with people who are not normally from there, it quickly changes the culture of an area.

  • How can we show changes in culture through art?

Here are some ideas:

you can make a snowglobe out of any clear plastic or glass container--mason jars, bottles, even lightbulbs!

Now that you have spent time exploring the world and looking at how art is influenced by the culture around it, it is your turn to make art. Think of what the global art has taught you, and show in your final project how your own world inspires you.

Shoeboxes are easy to find! You can use as many as you'd like!
